Yes, you can grow herbs too!

Hello, herb lovers! There is a lot to talk about regarding the ins and outs of growing herbs. I’ll give you some quick basics on growing a few common herbs:

  • Most herbs are sun-loving plants. Chives can tolerate shade but will also do well in the sun.

  • Most herbs like moderate watering, though mints, lemon verbena, and marjoram like more water, while rosemary, thyme, and sage are more drought tolerant.

  • Always prune your herbs, which is easy if you’re using them regularly. If they’re leggy, they’re are not getting enough sun or need to be pruned. It could be both.

  • Some herbs that will typically overwinter in Zone 3 are lovage, chives, tarragon, some thymes, chervil, and some mints.

  • Harvest herbs mid-morning before the heat of the day while the volatile oils are at their strongest.

  • Harvest herbs before flowers form unless you’re growing them for the flowers or seeds.

Use this handy chart to choose how you want to start your herbs. If I recommend starting inside from seed or cutting, it’s usually easier from cutting though seed is possible under ideal conditions. It’s the second week in June now, and it’s not too late to seed the annual herbs for a beautiful crop, like basil, cilantro, dill, parsley, summer savoury, and seasoning celery (also known as Amsterdam Celery). And there are still some herb starts in the garden shops and greenhouses, so grab some of those too.

An excellent book for beginner herb growers is Lois Hole’s Favourite Herbs. Whether a beginner gardener or a novice, I highly recommend all of Lois’ books, and they’re easy to find at used bookstores.

WE HAVE EXCITING NEWS!! If you’re local to the Stettler area and not in a position to grow your own herbs, our fresh-cut herbs will soon be available at the Stettler Sobeys. Follow us on social media for updates.
