The Walk 'n' Roll Challenge is taking a breather in 2023.

Grace Fix, Chair of the Heartland Beautification Committee, says the event is expected to resume in 2024.

"The four towns involved had a discussion and we decided we'd take a break," she says.

There are usually two to four communities competing in this four-month event that normally runs from May to August. Ponoka, Rocky Mountain House, and Wainwright have all participated in the challenge.

"It varies from year to year, depending on other activities the communities are involved in," she says.

The Walk 'n' Roll Challenge was initiated by the Heartland Beautification Committee in 2017, and Fix has been leading the charge since.

"Its goal is to help people realize that walking and biking, as their means of transportation, makes perfect sense in a town our size," says Fix. "It's great for people, and great for the planet."

Stettlerites register about 15,000 to 20,000 trips annually during the challenge. As a result, Stettler has won every year, except in 2021 when Wainwright claimed the title.
