The Stettler Steel Wheel Stampede Rodeo made a welcome return to the Stettler Exhibition grounds on July 17th despite smokey air conditions.

The Stettler Ag arena grandstands were full to near-capacity with dozens of people standing and much of the bleachers beside the riding area and behind the pens almost full.

The night started with a well choreographed presentation made by the Ladies of the Heartland who carried sponsor flags. The national anthem was sung by Cindy Liebe, and the cowboy’s prayer was presented by young Kaleigh Morris.

Strawbs Jones of Australia took an early lead in the Bareback competition with several other riders within a few points of the Australian’s lead. Denny Phipps came out with a 62, but after some discussion, the judges agreed to give him a re-ride, and he tied Jones on his second attempt.

Most of the Saddle Bronc riders were from Alberta. Logan Young of Tomahawk had a strong ride giving him the top position in the long-go round. The scores of the other successful rides were even closer than the first event.

Talented bull riders were paired with impressive bulls, and it proved difficult to score times.

The intermission performance were two, very talented, young old trick riders who delighted the crowds with their well-executed performance.

The short-go round of the evening was just as enjoyable as the first. The top three riders from each event returned to see who won the events for the single night. Strawb Jones won for bareback with 79 points. Logan Young won the Saddle Bronc with 76.5 and Chris Young won the Bull Riding with 72 points.

The Ladies of the Heartland returned to close the show carrying Canadian flags. The beer garden tent was then opened to anyone 18 and over for the celebration and dance through the evening.
