A new handibus may be coming to Stettler County.

The Stettler & District Handibus Society is preparing replace its current handibus, and is looking for additional board members to help.

"Anyone who is mechanically inclined or experienced with leases would be warmly welcomed," the Society posted on Facebook.

It takes about a year to arrange to build and deliver a new handibus.

"One thing people may not know about the handibus is how expensive they are, especially to outfit with the wheelchair lift and tie-downs," says Jody Chapman, program coordinator. "This is the main reason that we have gone with leasing our handibus rather than purchasing."

Here are some things you may not know about the current Stettler handibus:

  • The Society currently has one handibus. It's a 14-passenger bus with 12 seats and two spots for wheelchairs.

  • In 2022, the Stettler handibus travelled 20,291 km.

  • Not all handibuses are the same. The most important feature for the Stettler handibus is the wheelchair lift.

Chapman says the Society tries very hard to keep fares as low as possible. "We have to subsidize the per trip cost," she says.

Correction: The original article said a second handibus was being leased, which is incorrect. The Handibus Society is looking to replace the current handibus.
