Where are you from? Where did you grow up?
Brandon, Manitoba was the city that I grew up in for the first 8 years of my life. It remains a special place and holds many memories. Manitoba is my birthplace, but Alberta is my home.
Why do you (did you) choose Stettler as home?
My family moved from Manitoba to Alberta in my elementary years because of employment. Early on I became an Albertan, but still have many ties to Manitoba and Saskatchewan where I’ve also lived. My husband and I have a mixed cattle/grain farm north east of Stettler.
What do you do? What is your full title?
My work as a Family School Liaison in Stettler Elementary School is dedicated to students and their families. I love my job and am super passionate about helping people advocate for themselves and others. Building connections and fostering them through is an important aspect of FSL work. My families are my extended family. Also, I’m fortunate in that the team I work with is superb and our staff is incredibly supportive.
Education?
I have a degree in Social Work. Prior to working with kids, I practiced massage therapy and dabbled with cosmetology/hairstylist profession.
Family?
My ever-so-understanding 😁husband Brad and I have been married for 26 years. I’m still letting that sink in! We have two fabulous daughters Brittany and Roxy who are all grown up and trying to live their best life. I’m a proud Momma. Red Deer and Calgary are not too far, so we are able to see them often.
Who inspired you in your youth? My Dad has always promoted education, a good work ethic and a wild sense of humour. He and my Mom are both superstars to me. They have championed my efforts in many endeavours, even when I was somewhat of a teen renegade! My Dad’s slogan to me was always, “Up with hope! Down with dope, Penny.”
Who inspires you now?
Our Mental Health team whom I work with. They are truly a huge rainbow of beautiful souls. And of course my family.
Do you have any hobbies?
Yes. I love gardening, hiking, spinning records, photography, and most of all spending time with family (this includes my pets 🐕🐱) and others who continually put a smile on my face.
What are your plans for the future?
I would enjoy traveling a bit more. My addiction to rock/alternative music concerts isn’t going away anytime soon, so I’ll be rocking my heart out until the day I don’t. If I’m ever a grandmomma , I’ll be wearing that badge of honour religiously.
Anything else you would like to add about being a member of the community in Stettler County?
Stettler may not be big in size or population, but it is GRAND in the ongoing comradery of people. Our surrounding villages, hamlets, towns, all the rural areas are equally supportive.
Thank you to Penny Dahl for participating in our Local Spotlights.
