Gardening Tips for Zone 3B - July 1st Week

Row Covers for Brassicas

Nothing is more heartbreaking than losing an entire year’s crop of cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, or other brassicas to White Cabbage Moth Infestation. There are insecticide treatments that gardeners can use, but there is a simple way to reduce your chances of losing yield without using chemicals.

“Row covers” are light netting that keeps bugs out while providing young plants shade and protection from wind, heavy rain, or light hail. Brassicas flourish under the covers producing quicker and yielding better than uncovered plants.

Place the covers when you plant the young plants to keep eggs off the leaves, and as the plants grow, you will need to introduce a frame to hold the netting off the plants.
