The Stettler Regional Fire Department used a memorable teaching aid when it comes to kitchen safety.

At an open house held at the Stettler Station on October 14, fire crews created a grease fire on a stove in a specially-built outdoor shelter. They then tried extinguishing the grease fire with water.

The result? Instant and uncontrollable flames.

"Water is heavier than oil, so it sinks to the bottom," said LT. Steve Maruk, "and it rapidly converts to steam. It atomizes the particles of oil, and you'll see what happens."

The above photo shows the outcome.

According to Statistics Canada, cooking equipment is the #1 cause of fires in our nation, followed by heating equipment and appliances/household equipment.

“I had no idea how crazy it would be to put water on a fire like that," said one attendee. "Instinct tells us fire needs water, but this demonstration shows us that is not always the true.”

The Fire Department estimates a few hundred people attended the open house and BBQ. Sponsors of the event included: Vortex, Neilson Beef, Tandem Electric, JNH, Ol' Mac Donald’s Resort, and McDonald's.
