The Donalda School production of Pirates! The Musical debuted on April 25, and it was a smashing success.
It's especially remarkable because the play had been re-routed to the community hall, due to a fire in the school gym last March.
"It was amazing!" says producer/director/teacher Hillary Broughton of the performance.
Pirates! The Musical is an adventure set on the high seas that involves a stowaway and – you guessed it – pirates.
Broughton says Donalda School traditionally stages an elementary musical in the spring, but Pirates! is the first one since COVID health restrictions were implemented in 2020. She says students started rehearsing last February, although a Christmas musical was staged last December.
"Students were excited to be on stage and share the Pirates! production with friends and family," says Broughton. "I enjoyed watching the students' confidence and excitement grow as we drew closer to the play."
She says students developed leadership skills as they tackled different roles and challenges in staging the musical. They also learned to express themselves in new ways through singing, dancing, and making props.
