After 15 years of rescuing animals in need, Stettler's Animal Haven Rescue League is closing its doors.

The notice was posted on the AHRL Facebook page on September 29.

The official closure is November 15, 2023.

"People have been commenting that it is sad and we've also been getting a lot of appreciation for what we have done," says Michelle Fisher, Treasurer/Cat Coordinator. "Adopters have been sharing pictures of the dogs and cats that were former AHRL fosters and that has been so nice to see."

The comments on the Facebook page show how much the organization has impacted the community.

"Thank you all for your countless hours of volunteering and care for those who needed it," said one supporter. "Without you, we would not have had many years of love from our pets we adopted."

"Thank you for all your endless hours of support for these poor animals," wrote another.

The organization, founded in 2008, developed a network of foster homes to provide temporary care until forever homes were found.

Below is the closure notice as posted on Facebook and the AHRL website.

Animal Haven Rescue League

CLOSURE NOTICE

To: Animal Haven Rescue League Followers and Supporters,

We would like to start this letter by thanking you for your support over the past few years. You have been the reason AHRL was able to care for and rehome numerous cats, kittens, dogs and puppies that needed our help.

We regret to inform you that AHRL will be closing its doors and the rescue will be dissolved as of November 15, 2023. This was not an easy decision for the 2023 board members to make. The reasons for this decision include financial struggles, a minimal volunteer base, decrease in fosters, increasing intake, decreasing adoptions and increasing vet and food costs. We are sorry to say AHRL is no longer able to continue to support the animals who require care in Stettler and the surrounding area.

With this decision the animals in our care are still our number one priority and we are currently doing all we can to ensure they find appropriate homes. AHRL will be following the policies and protocols of the AGLC, Government of Alberta and Government of Canada to ensure that our finances are properly dealt with.

Here are a few information points and dates:

  • AHRL intake is officially closed

  • Our Facebook Messenger will be turned off on October 15, 2023

  • Our website will be taken down on October 15, 2023

  • Our Facebook page will be archived on November 15, 2023

  • Our rescue will be officially closed on November 15, 2023

Again, we would like to thank all of our fosters, volunteers, donors, Veterinary partners, local businesses and board members for your support over the past 15 years. A special thank you to Laura at Very Important Pets Boarding Kennel and Grooming Salon for taking care of countless animals for us at her kennel when we didn’t have the foster room. AHRL is proud of the work of its volunteers and board members and we are thankful that we were not only able to help many animals in need, but also have a positive impact in our community.

Thank you again,

Animal Haven Rescue League 2023 Board Members
